Gothic Music

Gothic (aka Goth or Gothic Rock) is a music genre that emerged from Post-Punk in the UK in the late 1970s with bands such as Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, and the Cure. Separate from Post-Punk, it stood out due to its darker sound with the use of minor chords, reverb, dark arrangements, and dramatic melodies having inspirations in gothic literature with themes of sadness, nihilism, tragedy, morbidity, evil, dark romanticism, a romantic idealization of death, vampires, supernatural imagination, and fantasy. Gothic music gave rise to a broader subculture that included clubs, fashion, and publications in the 1980s and 90s which continues growing in creative force in the 21st century.
