Modern Jazz

Modern Jazz, also known as Progressive Jazz, includes various styles of Jazz that have evolved since the early 1940s and are marked generally by harmonic and rhythmic complexity, emphasis on chord progressions rather than melody, a tendency to draw on classical forms and styles, and eclectic, allusive melodic tags in improvisation. Modern Jazz dominated much of the instrumental Jazz scene until the new Smooth/Acid/Nu genres emerged. Bebop has had a significant influence on Modern Jazz - it is driven by complex, sophisticated harmonies and the combinations of acoustic instruments to create exciting new sounds, and it also includes odd time signatures and influences from other cultures such as Africa, Cuba, India, and more.
