Smooth Jazz | instrumental

The 1960s ushered in a new era of jazz with an emphasis on slick production, accessible melodies, and string accompaniment. Smooth jazz has developed and altered since then, but it still relies on smooth, funky rhythms, an emphasis on melody over improvisation, and polished production qualities, often blessed with sonorous vocal melodies. Notable artists include Chuck Mangione, Al Jarreau, and George Benson. Influenced by Rhythm and Blues, Funk, Rock, and Pop music styles (separately, or, in any combination), Smooth Jazz tends to be downtempo (90–105 BPM range), layering a melody played on instruments such as soprano and tenor saxophone or guitar over a backdrop that typically consists of programmed rhythms and various synth pads and/or samples.
