The Corner Cafe

A solo acoustic/vocal piece about a strange dream. Going to a smoky cafe/bar in the middle of the night. Very jazzy, bluesy, and full of ethereal lyrics.

Lyrics

I went down to this little café at about a quarter to four
In the morning it was quiet outside,
But as soon as I opened the door,
The man by the bar said “how do you do?”
It seemed he knew me from somewhere,
But I hadn’t a clue.
And then he called me over to his table
And be bought me a drink…
I didn’t know what to think.

When I sat down at his table,
I noticed that he didn’t have no shoes.
He just started talkin’ ‘bout something
And I swear he was preaching the blues.
And then he brought something up about this girl I know.
Her face, I couldn’t place, And he had no pic to show.
Then he said “she’s sitting right over there
Sitting right on that chair.”

I looked over there with a glazed stare,
And I could not pretend,
That this would happen again.
I said, “first of all, I don’t know where I am.
Last thing I knew, I was sleeping in bed.”
He said, “Well, did you ever think
that maybe you’re still there?”
I think it was something in the air.

I kept on sitting there talking to him,
And he bought me another drink.
It tasted like this one he ordered
Was mixed up right in the bathroom sink.
I finally said, “Hey buddy, who are you?”
He said, “I’m not quite sure”
And then he asked me, too.
I said, “I thought you said you knew me,
And I knew that girl…
I guess it’s not such a small world.”

When I finally woke up,
From this terrible dream,
I could not help myself,
So I let out a scream.
Then I fell out of bed,
And I hit my head,
And I feel like I’m dead,
And I don’t know what else to say…
About that little café.
