Country Music
Country Music is a blend of popular musical forms originally found in the Southern United States and the Appalachian Mountains, with roots in traditional folk, Celtic, gospel and old-time styles that evolved rapidly in the 1920s. Country Music has produced major solo artists, from Elvis Presley, once known as the Hillbilly Cat on Louisiana Hayride, to Garth Brooks, one of the top domestic-selling U.S. artists. While album sales in many genres declined after 2005, the genre had a strong year in 2000, when U.S. album sales rose sharply during the first six months. Listening nationwide has remained steady, reaching millions of adults each week. The term Country Music gained popularity in the 1940s as hillbilly music faded, and today it describes many styles and subgenres, including traditional country, bluegrass, ballads and two-step music.
